Choosing the right
Chiropractor
If you are one of the many people who suffer from back pain
chances are the thought of going to a chiropractor has crossed
your mind. That being said, finding the right chiropractor may
be easier said than done. If you are going to trust someone to
adjust your spine then you want to be sure that they are
proficient in their field, and attentive to your needs. With a
little leg work you will be able to find a chiropractor that
can help you get the better quality of life that you are
looking for.
Recommendations from family, friends, and co-workers can be one
of the best ways to learn of a great chiropractor. Personal
recommendations say a lot about a health care professional. If
you can’t get references to a chiropractor, try calling your
insurance company. They may be able to recommend someone from
their database of providers. Otherwise, you might also try
checking with your primary care doctor.
It’s very important to choose a chiropractor who will be able
to meet your needs. Step one in determining the competence of a
chiropractor is to look at their education and experience. Find
out what kind of training they completed and what kind of
experience they have gained in the field. Knowing that they are
properly trained can set your mind at ease.
Any good chiropractor will also be fully accredited. Take care
to ensure that your potential chiropractor is accredited by the
Council on Chiropractic Education. You will also want to check
their professional record with the Chiropractic Board of
Examiners. Be sure to check that they have never received any
disciplinary reprimands.
You’ll also want to understand that kind of chiropractic
maneuvering techniques are used by your potential chiropractor.
Many chiropractors use gentle force, but others are far less
subtle in their manipulations. Some chiropractors use
instrumental manipulation instead of manual techniques. Make
sure to ask your potential doctor about the techniques they use
most often and what to expect at a typical chiropractic
visit.
X-rays are often used in chiropractic offices, and you will
want to find out if your chiropractor utilizes them. X-rays can
be really helpful in tying your pain to a specific diagnosis,
and knowing that you will have that documentation with your
chiropractor should give you some peace of mind.
How easy is it to work with this chiropractors office? The
truth is that if it is not easy, chances are you will not keep
up with your appointments. Make sure that you are able to make
appointments that will work with your particular schedule.
Additionally, the location of their office is important. If you
are constantly driving across town it will become less and less
practical to keep up with your appointments. Perhaps the most
important factor to take into account is if your insurance will
cover your chiropractic visits to this doctor.
Finally, remember that none of this is important if you don’t
get along with the doctor. Finding someone with a good
personality fit is just as important as the other
considerations. Do they pay attention to what you have to say?
Do you feel comfortable around them? While this is a purely
subjective judgment, it’s one you should pay attention to.
